July 6, 1934 page 1 _____ Keeps Vice-Chancellor von Papen in Office — Actions against the Revolution Ended _____ Number of those shot in the "Second Revolution" last Saturday amount to under 50 individuals — For the most part the Foreign Press is on Hitler's Side — Former Chancellor von Schleicher and Staff Chief Röhm are among the Victims — Gregor Strasser, a former Nazi Leader, supposedly committed Suicide — Reports still unclear — Absolute Peace prevails throughout Germany _____ Berlin, June 5th. — Today President Paul von Hindenburg refused to grant Hitler's request and demanded that Franz von Papen retain his place as Vice-Chancellor of the nation. Hitler had taken a trip to Neudeck to negotiate there with 86-year-old President Hindenburg. As a result Papen regained unrestricted freedom of movement after having been guarded for three days. Chancellor Hitler had given his loyal retinue to understand that the action against the "Revolution" had ended and that no one by his own hand, even for the best of intentions, was to undertake further repression against those whom they considered to have revolted against the Chancellor. The government reported that fewer than 50 individuals were executed. The events occurred in Berlin and throughout Germany last Saturday. Hitler's famous threat that all conspirators "heads will roll" were reiterated by Reich Propaganda Minster Dr. Jospeh Goebbels in a radio speech which was transmitted on Saturday via all German radio stations throughout Germany and we could hear it so clearly here that one might believe that is came directly from the Syracuse Hotel via WSYR. In his speech Dr. Goebbels stated that any further attempt at revolution would be ruthlessly suppressed. He assured that Germany is completely peaceful and that Hitler was the complete master of the situation. He gave an overview of the events and said, "On Friday evening, June 29th, the Führer and his subordinates were at a Party meeting in beautiful Godesberg on the Rhine. Only a few of his inner circle had any inkling of the sinister plans, which had been hatched by certain Party members. During the meeting Hitler made an announcement that by the next day matters should be settled and it was high time this should be dealt with. On Friday evening the Führer and I flew to Munich and drove from there to Roehm's residence, where we surprised the conspirators. With great composure and wonderous courage the Führer himself arrested the conspirators. A few minutes later Roehm's bodyguards appeared before the house. Hitler sent them back to Munich. With the shout 'Heil Hitler' they obeyed his order. "Automobile after automobile arrived at Roehm's residence in order to join up with the conspirators. Each automobile was detained. The Führer was informed of how badly they had been misled. Hitler himself arrested the guilty parties. Meanwhile Goering lost no time in Berlin dealing with reactions. The populace felt reassured. Peace and order prevailed and personal security was guaranteed. The German people can congratulate itself for the events of June 30th. The German Reich is secure under the leadership of Adolf Hitler." "Once against everyone in the country can say, We are joyfully ready to take the hand of anyone who extends it to us in friendship, but we will smite the hand of anyone who raises it against the Führer." President Paul von Hindenburg sent a telegram from Neudeck congratulating Reich Chancellor Hitler for saving the fatherland from serious danger. At the same time he congratulated Prussian Minister President Hermann Wilhelm Goering for "energetic suppression of high treason." Such an event as a "revolution" seldom occurs without bloodletting as is proven here where the number of victims may range from 30 to 300. Among the dead are Hitler's immediate predecessor in the Reich Chancellor's Office, General Kurt v. Schleicher and his wife, who departed life in her own home after the General had resisted arrest. Others include Chief of Staff and active leader of the "Brown" and "Black" millions in the Armies of the SA amd SS, Captain Ernst Roehm; the often-called "Assassin" Edmund Heines, recently Police President of Breslau; and the Potdam Police Enforcer Count Helldorf. Even the Count allegedly resisted arrest. It was Helldorf who once demanded every time an "SA" man was killed, that the bodies of three Communists were to be delivered to him. Roehm's execution followed after he did not use the pistol, which was left in his cell so he could commit suicide. He had begged that Hitler, his one-time intimate friend, should shoot him. July 6, 1934 page 2 _____ Combat Patrols of Career Soldiers currently planned The report on the draft of legislation for increasing border coverage was being discussed in Chamber. It dealt with previous measures which now would be cast in legislative form. The bill provides for all active special troops, which will be immediately prepared to launch a counteroffensive against the enemy should war break out. Naturally these troops will be equipped with the most modern motorized transports of every variety. In order to guarantee the best training for these squads, if possible, only career soldiers will be inserted into the ranks. Concerning this reform the Echo des Paris claimed that they should change the current French recruitment system and create a career army in France in order to give this reform the necessary material support. The newspaper was attempting to prepare public opinion for an increase in military service duration. It seems unavoidable to us, the newspaper writers further, that before long the French government will envision measures to offset reductions in recruitment by means of immediate increase in service time. While to this point in Paris they have given this some thought, they haven't made their specific plans all that clear. They seem to no longer consider it necessary to observe precautionary measures. If it comes to a demand for deployment of special troops there can be no doubt that the French Chamber will not have the slightest difficulty in implementing this plan. When it concerns the question of military buildup, there's merely a large front extending from left to right. In Geneva they demand that the army imposed on Germany should be transformed from career soldiers into a militia, while in France universal conscription is to be supplemented with a large contingent of career soldiers and the military clout is to be increased with special troops. Scarcely anything can make the case clearer that the thought of military buildup in any form no longer plays a minimal role in the reckoning of French politics. One sees only one goal: increased militarization by all means possible, going as far as relinquishing any attempt to hide the activity. One has to ask, where does the other side get the nerve to make allegations against Germany because of its demand for defense weaponry. |

_____ NRA Logo (National Recovery Act) - "We Do Our Part" New and Difficult Days for Our Old Homeland _____ Even tody one cannot get a clear picture of what consequences the recent developments will have, and only an ardent wish can fortify us all that what has occurred will not serve to shatter German unity or the German nation and become a trump card in the hands of other nations which consider the Third Reich a dangerous foe. Reaction and radicalism would be attempted soon or later. A change in the national government brought this about, and perhaps even expected. In this regard Hitler's actions, after he was informed that a revolution was in the works, was the only logical course, even if it is regrettable that so much blood had to be spilled. It's painful to the sensibilities of everyone, whether or not in hindsight certain phases of the politics of the Hitler Regime and its moral grounding, etc, could have presented a certain dubious character. Events of the past few days where the leader of the Storm Troopers, who was one of Hitler's intimates and who was sent to prison with Hitler after the Beer Hall Coup [Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in November 1923,] provides evidence of moral sickness and thus he should have been excluded from any leadership position. What happened back then has consequences now. Luckily the government has not tried to cover up this sequence of last week's events with the cloak of neighborly love and it's one of the reasons why in many commentaries of these latest developments they've expressed the hope that as a result the politics of the German government will undergo change in more than one aspect. |

July 6, 1934 page 7 May 21st - September 23, 1934 1634 to 1934 Germany's Calling You! _____ Germany Will Rearm Itself _____ Germany will concentrate on its internal problems and not worry about others — However it must be so strong that others will not dare to attack it — Other nations have supposedly done the same — Mussolini will make a reciprocal visit _____ Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler gave a brief explanation of his foreign politics as they will be presented at a conference in Venice with Mussolini of Italy. "Germany will concentrate on its internal problems and allow other nations to do the same," he stated. At the same time he gave to understand that despite the Versailles Treaty Germany will rearm itself as a great nation which no one else will want to attack. The Chancellor made it clear that he is seeking to maintain the peace through preparedness, "We must be so strong that no one dares to attack us." Then he added, "The more the world speaks of alliances, the more it becomes clear that we must gain our own strength. We have no block or alliance with other people. But we must be mindful that no block by other nations shall threaten the German people as we gain advantages by our internal work. When other people say they must upgrade their weapons if Germany gains weapon parity, then rest assured these other nations will build up their weaponry. Germany does not intend to attack them. We just want to be strong so no other nation will dare to attack us." It was clear that the speech was directed at France, which was attempting to seal an alliance with Soviet Russia while it pretended to have further friendship with anti-communist Poland. "The world would be better off if everyone would attend to their own affairs," he continued. "If you ask me what's necessary to secure world peace, I would say that we National Socialists have done everything we can to instill the spirit of self-respect in 70 million people and gain the respect of others. We have enough to do among ourselves. I suggest that other people who have enough to do within their own population, to just go do it. We Germans want to set ourselves free of the old human mistakes, no longer see ourselves as the splinter in the eyes of others and thus liberate ourselves from our own perceived barriers." It was offically acknowledged that Premier Mussollini had accepted Chancellor Hitler's invitation and come to Berlin in the next few months to reciprocate the visit by the German Chancellor. The time of the visit was not firmly established. Perhaps Mussolini will undertake the visit at the beginning of autumn. By Stagecoach in 1877 — By Plane in 1934 _____ A half cenury ago, for his 275 mile stagecoach route, one hundred hours and ninety-two horses were required, a distance the seven-ton United covered in one and one-half hours. Instead of holding the reins of six horses, he streaked along behind the combined power of 1100 horses as a stewardess served lunch, "I never dreamed anything like this would happen," mused Tice. Tice is shown with Miss Arvilla Burns (left), attired in the styles of 1877, and Cornelia Peterman in the modern garb of a United Air Lines stewardess. |

July 6, 1934 page 8 _____ (Continued from page 1) Karl Ernst, Roehm's confident, was shot by Hitler's bodyguard. He fell unconscious as he caught sight of the retinue, but came back to himself and shouted, "Germany awake. Hail your Führer" before he collapsed under the barrage of bullets. Sanders, Roehm's chief of staff, was shot on Saturday morning. As successor to Karl Ernst, Kurt Dalüge, Prussian State Councillor, Ministerial Director of the Police Department in the Prussian Interior Ministry, Chief of the Prussian State Police, and General of the National Police was appointed leader of the Storm Troopers in Berlin and the Province of Brandenburg. Reports indicate that Herbert von Bose, adjutant to von Papen and Dr. Heinrich Klausener, leader of the Catholic Action Society, committed suicide. It was stated that both had been shot as they when they were provided weapons in their jail cells. In Berlin 60 men were allegedly placed against the wall and shot. "Hitler saved his country and placed love for Germany above personal friendship," the London newspaper Daily Mail wrote. The Italian Press condoned Hitler's decisions and stated that "only swift action could save the government." For now Italy hopes for progress in the field of foreign politics and praises the Führer's courage. Washington is still silent concerning the German events, which makes opinions based on vague reports impossible. The Moscow Party Newspaper is convinced that the events in Germany will benefit the Communists. Even if Hitler is successful in neutralizing the Roehm group, millions of Storm Troopers still remain, which one could either betray or side with. The petit bourgeois, whom Hitler has led around by the nose, will be enlightened by the Saturday murders and turn its support behind the Communist leaders. Austria expressed the hope that the results of the German events may be imminent renewl of relations between both countries. Munich. — After his removal from office and incarceration, Ernst Roehm, the perverse head of the Stormtroopers, had the choice between suicide or execution. They put a loaded revolver in his cell and recommended he choose the honorable way out. Roehmn refused and said, "Under no circumstances will I commit suicide. Let Hitler shoot me. I am ready to give my life." And Roehm kept his word. He was placed against the wall and he turned his back to the execution squad. At one time Roehm counted as one of the most powerful men in the Hitler government. His moral degeneracy was well known. Two years ago letters were made public which shone him in a very unfavorable light and the content of those letter have never been denied. When Hitler flew to Munich on the night between Friday and Saturday he surprised Roehm and Edmund Heines in Roehm's villa at an incredible orgy. The moral degeneracy of the former Chief of Staff was officially regretted. The official outrage is only surprising in that it just now comes. The veil over the dramatic events in the night between Friday and Saturday — the orgies of Roehm and his subordinates in Roehm's villa, the surprising of the conspirators in the Brown House [Nazi Headquarters in Munich] and the arrest of various junior officers on the way to a secret meeting — is only partially lifted. Admittedly there are only short, disjointed reports which come to one's ear and which in their totality form a shocking image of mercilessness with which the bodies of leaders of the Stormtrooper Division and other persons executed over that weekend were "buried" by the authorities. Only a few know anything and they dare not speak about it. Apparently the corpses were simply dragged out from the execution chamber, taken to a secluded locale and thrown into hastily dug holes. The last rites of the Church, which are even observed for a hardcore criminal after his death, were refused to the victims of the "Bloody Saturday" in Germany. Inquiries to the government authorities whether relatives could have the bodies or whether they were "decently" interred merely received a shrug of the shoulders and if a direct answer was requested by someone, he mostly received a flippant "What does it matter?" One man, who belonged to Wilhelm Göring's inner circle and who so vehemently supported the Chancellor in his "House Cleaning," received this reply to a similar question: "Oh, they were simply carted away." In an interview Dr. Hanfstaengl, Press Chief for the Reich, who was currently in Boston, stated the Christians of the world should be thankful to those in Germany that Hitler came to power a year ago because otherwise German would have fallen to Bolschevism and there would be no religion anymore in Germany. As is already well known, a new anti-semitic campaign has brocken out in various sections of Germany, especially the rural districts and in relation to this Cardinal Michaek Faulhaber, Archbishop of Munich, has been arrested. Hundreds of Jews are considering fleeing from Germany. _____ Text below pictures in the lower left corner reads: "Figures in Revolt"
_____ [Article from column 2, top, unrelated to the Second Revolution.] _____ After the weather prophet predicted rain on Friday last week but the oppressive heat held from day to day without prospect of rain, on Thursday afternoon the sky turned dark and ominous then a hailstorm broke loose bringing hail pellets on average one inch in diameter. Luckily this didn't last long until the hail transformed to rain and the temperature sank to 23 degrees (73°F.) Less than half an hour later the sun shone and it was as hot as it was before the storm. In that short period of time large tree boughs broke, telephone wires fell to the street and partially halted traffic. The hail pellets also shattered several windows especially in garden greenhouses. The hail fell most heavily in the business district while other parts of the city and the surrounding area were almost fully spared. In other parts of the State rain and wind storms created a large amount of damage. |

July 13, 1934 _____ Hindenburg had taken a Stand upon hearing of the Intrigues of the Nazi Stormtroopers against the Armed Forces — Hitler had declared his Agreement — Because of This the "Second Revolution" was expedited — Hitler now leans more on the Military, which shall remain untouched by Politics. As unbelievable as that might seem, Hitler has deal a fatal blow on his own private army, with whose help he propelled himself to his current position of power. The summary execution of eight of the highest Stormtrooper leaders, the arrest of hundreds of subordinates and their uncertain fate have made the Hitler Troops powerless and disbanded to a certain extent. The complete reorganization on many smaller basics will take time. Hitler will leave the Armed Forces alone. They are happy to be liberated from the arrogance of the Brown Shirts. Hindenburg had insisted that the intrigues of the Stormtroopers against the Military, especially by its chief of Staff Roehm, had to stop and that the Military should not be made into a political gameball. Hitler had allegedly made promises as the "Second Revolution" began with the subsequent clean sweep. People also speak again about Hindenburg's testament, in which the grand old Field Marshal of the nation swore to keep the Military free of political influence. Hindenburg allegedly signed this testament two weeks ago. People expected the Military would exercise a greater influence on the government's politics. Goering is quite ready to work with the Military. Until then the Cabinet was divided. At least three government ministers are against the suicidal foreign policy which isolates Germany. It is the conviction of the cool heads of the Military that such a policy is a grave mistake and that Germany can sustain economic isolation about as well as the military could. One hears from reliable sources that a presidential crisis would be difficult to prevent. Hindenburg should be outraged over the shooting of General von Schleicher, a close peronal friend. The arrest of Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen also upset him and he could only make the situation worse if he was called him back after his resignation from office. Instead the government sent a telegram of congratulations. In diplomatic circles no one would have been amazed if, in connection to this, a surprise would have come from Neudeck. |

July 13, 1934 page 4 _____ It is unwise to issue threats in order to gain the friendship of a person or to solicit the good will of a neighboring people. The "acting" leader, Reich Minister Rudolf Hess (who has been chosen to take Vice-Chancellor von Papen's place) has placed particular emphasis in his Königsberg address on Germany's desire for peace just as it was repeatedly stated by the Führer himself and other Cabinet members. There's no reason to doubt the honesty of this desire for peace. Reich Minister Hess went so far in his peace assertion to call directly on France's friendship and on the support of his efforts by the French frontline fighters because they have learned the absolute horror of war. "Through friendship and understanding couldn't we prevent renewed carnage?" So far every reasonable human being could endorse the Minister's words and his efforts in the interest of world peace's complete success. But when the peaceful premise is followed by a threatening afterthought: "I would like to warn the world not to have false impressions of the Germany of today, the Germany of peace, which is no longer the Germany of yesterday, the Germany of pacifism ..." And if he is warned about an invasion (threatened by no one): "Just dare to attack us! Try marching even once into Germany! The entire world would then learn the spirit of the new Germany!..." "Then it won't take any imagination that France won't hear the pipes of peace over the trumpets of war and doesn't want to hear them." France's response is meaningful" The Hess speech (states an informant of the Paris government) is an attempt to frustrate France's efforts which aim to bring England and the other European powers together in "defense." In German this means" France will endeavor to restore the Triple Alliance of France-England-Russia along with members of the "Little Entente" and possibly Italy. That would produce a regrettable consequence to the good and honorably meant speech by the acting Führer — an outcome which would take some diplomacy and politeness to prevent. |

July 13, 1934 page 5 _____ Newspaperman and Grand Secretary of the Harugari becomes a Flight Enthusiast _____ From the Rochester Abendpost The editor of the Syrcuse Union and Grand Secretary of the German Order of the Harugari of the State of New York, Walter E. Mossdorf, spent many days in Rochester so his wife, Mrs. Maria Lill-Mossdorf along with their little daughter could spend their vacation with her relatives at 980 Avenue D. For the first time in his life on Sunday he took an airplane ride over Rochester and the surrounding area and he was so delighted and enthused by it that he's now considering shaking the everyday dust off his shoes and seeing the marvelous world from a few thousand meters higher. Mr. Mossdorf was the guest of Ray Hylan, a well-know Rochester aviator and flight instructor, who operates the "Welch Flying Service" and is the owner of three first-class airplanes and one seaplane. He hinself flew the large airplane into the air with Messrs. Mossdorf, John Boase, and Joseph Lill, the later an avid student of Mr. Hyland who hopes to get his flight license later this year so he may transport passengers. A solo flight of young Lill (a brother of Mrs. Mossdorf) indicates that he has already become an aviation master. A large number of well-known aviators have already come out of Mr. Hylan's school. |

July 20, 1934 page 1 _____ Considered it necessary considering the Widespread Anti-German Propaganda here at home — Testimony before the House Committee New York, N.Y. — George Silvester Viereck testified before the House Committee investigating Unamerican Activities that he received $2000 Dollars in cash for four months starting in June 1933 for Germany-related police investigative work from the former New York General Consul, Dr. Otto Kiep. Earlier he had testified that he received a monthly salary of $1750 from the publishing firm of Carl Byoir while on contract with the German Reich Railway. Viereck indicated that reconnaissance into German interests here at home would be absolutely necessary as a "preventative measure" against anti-German propaganda. Just recently France approved 80 million Francs for propaganda purposes, particularly in the United States. After this statement the Committee went into a two-hour executive session after which the chairman, Congressman McCormack stated Viereck could not provide definitive proof for the existence of French propaganda in America. Viereck was told that the money he was paid came from friends of Dr. Kiep in Germany. He received it in cash to use on the pretext of defense against "spies among the professional Jews and Bolschevists." Viereck stated he was an admirer of Hitler, who told him he had done nothing other than to curtail a few of the Jewish "special privileges." Hitler hadn't declared war on the Jews; rather they had declared war on him. On a remark by Viereck that it might have been a mistake to forbid the Jews to swim at the beaches by means of assault, Hitler asnwered such assaults are not authorized, which raised the question whether similar bans did not also exist in America. Viereck replied in the affirmative. |

July 27, 1934 page 1 _____ Following the Murder of Chancellor Dollfuss _____ Austrian Nazis performed the Work, which attempted to gain Control of the Government through a Coup — Italian Army stands ready to respond — German Nazis deny any Involvement — Allies will protect Austria's Independence _____ Vienna, July 26th. — Austria was brought to the verge of revolution yesterday by Nazis who attempted to gain control of the government though a coup with the result that Chancellor Dollfuss was killed in the revolt. At first the Nazis attempted to seize Radio Vienna, the most important station in Austria, using loaded revolvers and forcing the announcer to interrupt a musical program with the announcement that the Dollfuss government had resigned. This was supposed to signal a Nazi uprising throughout the country. "Anton Rintelen, former ambassador to Italy and current governor of Steiermark, has been entrusted with the building of a new government." This closed the broadcasr, which set the entire city into commotion. Later Rintelen allegedly committed suicide. The government immediately doubled all patrols in from of public buildings and issued an announcement denying the broadcast and assurances that it was mastering the situation. In the interim there was heavy fighting in front of the Chancellor's building as the Nazis tried to infiltrate it and resistance by the guards escalated. One group of Austrian Nazis pushed into the building, killed its bitterest enemy, Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss, then occupied the building until they were given the guarantee that they could safely travel to Germany — this guarantee was later rescinded when it became known that Dollfuss was dead. The Nazis, around 144 of them, were taken to Marokam Barracks, divested of their uniforms and held in confinement pending the result of a Cabinet meeting under the leadership of the new Chancellor, Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg, the Education Minister. Dollfuss was shot while in custody of men disguised as officers of the Home Guard. Emil Fey, idol of the Home Guard and former Vice-Chancellor, was one of the captives from 12:45 to 7 o'clock in the evening and supposedly it was he who deceived the Nazis and promised them safe passage to Germany after they had threatened to kill the captives. A drive through Vienna, which one American reporter undertook, indicated that the entire city had a warlike appearance. One encountered army tanks and policemen armed to the teeth and there were soldiers posted at strategic points with machine guns. Troops fired one salvo after another inside the the Finance Building, in which the Vienna Radio Station was located and after a while the Nazis located inside responded with rifle fire. 300 Nazis disguised as Home Guard reportedly gained entry to the radio station to start the coup with a false announcement of Dollfuss' resignation. Italian troops allegedly stood ready waiting for orders to march immediately into Austria. Mussolini had already placed 40,000 troops at the Austrian border. The German government recalled Mr. Rieth, German Minister in Austria, back to Germany. Italy's Premier Benito Mussolini was already in Riccione where today, Friday, he wanted to meet with Chancellor Dollfuss. When her husband was being killed, Dollfuss' wife and their two children were spending time in Italy, where on Friday they were expected to meet with Mussolini. She was Mussolini's guest and he accompanied her to the airfield from which she would depart and then drive to the corpse of her murdered husband. German Nazis were blamed for the death of the Austrian Chancellor, a charge which they vehemently denied. Naturally France is the originator of the allegation. The Vatican in Rome is very upset by the events in Austria. Pope Pius liked the little Chancellor and held an audience with him last summer and decorated him with the highest honor of the Catholic Church. Prince Ernst von Starhemberg, head of the Austrian Home Guard who was also in Italy, flew back to Vienna immediately after the announcement of the Chancellor's murder. It is he who will become Dollfuss' successor. France fears the possibility that Austria will lose its independence and the Nazis could win the upperhand. Should the Nazi regime attempt to unite Germany with Austria there will be reason to believe that the Little Entent and Italy will join forces with them. The German borders have been blockaded by the Berlin government to prevent Nazis from crossing the border into Austria, which could light the fire that explodes the tinderbox. At the time of the coup Hitler was in Southern Germany, not far from the Austrian border. He immediately returned to Germany. The United States has not publically issued any statement on the events in Austria. George H. Carle, former American Minister in Austria said, "The murder of Dollfuss is a dangerous blow to peace in Austria." A civil war or an international war may result from this regrettable affair. |

August 3, 1934 page 1 _____ Adolf Hitler the Unrestricted Ruler of Germany as Successor to von Hindenburg _____ Neudeck, Germany, August 2nd. — This morning at 9AM, or 4AM American Standard Time, Reich President Paul von Hindenburg peacefully slipped away from this life at his estate of Neudeck in East Prussia at the age of 86 years. His end had been expected for hours as physicians were unable to halt the progress of his illness. The death of the Field Marshal so revered by the German people was inevitable and he died while in an unconscious state. His death occurred on the same day as twenty years before Russian troops first came onto German soil and the first German troops marched into northern France. Members of Hindenburg's family stood by the side of the aged Reich President as he passed away. His son, Colonel Oskar von Hindenburg, a member of his father's General Staff during the World War, was present as were his two daughters, Irmgard (Mrs. von Brockhausen) and Anna Marie (Mrs. von Pentz.) Shortly after 9AM his family, which was staying near the home of the sick man, realized that his condition had changed. At 9:15AM the blue and white flag of the President's family was placed at half-mast and everyone knew that the end had come. The official bulletin, which announced the news to the world, read: "Reich President, General Field Marshal
All bells in the neighboring districts and the small nearby town of Freystadt announced his death. Flags of mourning appears in all windows and the entire population flocked to the streets with tears in the eyes of many because of Hindenburg's death. Especially great was the pain felt by civil servants, who had been with him for many years. They cried as they came out of the house. Doorn, Holland, August 2nd, — From his local residence, where the former German Kaiser has had to stay since the end of the World War, he sent a telegram of condolence to olonel von Hindenburg, the son of the President, which read as follows: "The Empress (Hermine) and I grieve deeply with you and the German people. One life, extraordinarily blessed by God, has fulfilled its task. The Crown Prince will bring our final greetings to the hero of Tannenberg, who has been called away to eternal life." (Signed) Wilhelm,
Berlin, August 2nd. — This morning at 9AM, the same moment when President Paul von Hindenburg closed his eyes, Adolph (sic) Hitler, former unknown Lance Corporal in Hindenburg's Army, assumed the leadership of the German nation and has been chosen Reich President. The Council of Ministers, which met yesterday evening in a special session, decided that Hitler should function as German president as soon as Hindenburg dies. Hitler, who is empowered as Reich Chancellor and leader of Germany and who is retained by the only political party, the Nazis, is currently also the master of the German Army, Marines and Civilian Government. In short, he is the completely unfettered ruler of the nation. Hitler had visited President von Hindenburg's sickbed a few days before his passing. Austria Accuses Germany _____ Propaganda Chief of Austria states over the Radio that Germany's Guilt for the Putsch is firmly documented — Secret Plans found on one Prisoner — Two Men sentenced to Death — Nazis Executed — Swift Governmental Action against all Nazis _____ Vienna, August 1st. — After the execution of the Nazi conspirators Franz Holzweber and Otto Planetta, both of whom were found guilty of high treason, the Austrian government renewed its charge against Germany as the actual guilty party for the coup in Vienna and the murder of Federal Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss. Propaganda Chief Walter Adams has stated over the radio in the name of the Cabinet that plans for the Nazi Putsch, which also took into consideration the possibility of civil war, were found in the shoes of a man who was arrested in Kollerschalg in Upper Austria. The man was in possession of a German Reich passport under the name Franz Heel. August 3, 1934 page 1 _____ Turns to Hitler because of Klausener's Death This has aroused feelings in Catholic circles of whether or not the government had made definitive charges against him. Now the Catholic diocesan newspaper has dedicated a lengthy article to Klausener's memory. The newspaper was seized but released an hour and a half later. At first Bishop Bares had sent the General Vicar of the Diocese to the Interior Minister requesting information on Klausener's death. Minister Frick referred him to Prussian Premier Göring, who said "that he himself knew nothing about the matter." Only the secret police could give information. However even a written request to Göring brought no results. Therefore Bares has not turned to Hitler himself. |

August 3, 1934 page 4 _____ All Germans in the city, who have an interest in working with a designated German radio club and are musically inclined, will be offered the opportunity to join one. Mostly German musicians and singers are wanted, who at the same time can work on an English program at WFBL. Information and applications should be directed to Mr. Walter Lentz, 815 South West St., Syracuse, N.Y. Mr. Lentz, a young German man and founder of the Utica Radio Club, has moved to Syracuse with the intention of settling here. In Utica for the last two years a German program has been broadcast and Mr. Lentz wants to have a German program here in Syracuse which will have greater success than the one in Utica, where he received hundreds of written letters in thanks and telephoned best wishes. We'd also like to mention that people who humorously inclined will also be given the opportunnity to participate in this German program. May Mr. Lentz have success in his enterprise to bring a "German Hour" to Syracuse and may he receive all the support he needs in the interest and to the benefit of the German population of Syracuse. |

August 3, 1934 page 8 _____ (Continued from Page 1) The plans did not name the Nazi conspirators. The documents were written in a secret code, which could be partially deciphered. The word "Sommerfest" (Summer Festival) stood for an unarmed Nazi demonstration in the case of Federal Chancellor Dollfuss' resignation. In th event of a conflict the word "Preisschiessen" (Shooting Competition) and "Italienische Nacht" (Italian Night) stood for an armed uprising. The fact that the Austrian government publicized these documents can be seen as a sign that peace with the German government is not currently a prospect. On the other hand one will recognize the efforts of the Austrian government to compel the German government to take strong action against Austrian escapees in order to demonstrate its non-participation in the Nazi Putsch in Austria. Franz Winkler, previously a member of the Dollfuss government, made a truly sensational allegation. He's currently residing in Czechoslovakia, where he said in an interview that the Home Guard had worked out plans to oust Dictator Dollfuss. However the Nazi Putsch played havoc with those plans. Vienna. — The first decree of the Schuschnigg government, which was just issued, was directed against the National Socialists. It mandated that all persons who during the uprising took past in the murder of Dollfuss were to be transported to concentration camps. In the concentration camps they were sentence to hard labor. All their possessions were confiscated. This swift action placed even stricter measures than had been employed by Dollfuss against the Socialists. The government announced Vice-Chancellor Starhemberg's appointment as the successor to Dollfuss and leader of the Fatherland Front. His appointment to the post was the most important event of the day. On Saturday murdered Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss of Austria was taken to his grave in Vienna after Cardinal Imnitzer read the funeral mass in St, Stefan's Cathedral. 500 prelates also took part in the ceremony including two archbishops and forty bishops. There were 30,000 people in the funeral procession which extended five miles down the streets of Vienna. Priests, nuns, military men, diplomats, laborers and clerks, Cabinet ministers, princesses and nurses all marched behind the funeral wagon in endless masses, a tribute rarely witnessed even for an earlier Austrian ruler being carried out of St. Stefan's Cathedral. Four and a half hours later from when the procession had been set in motion, 24 cannon shots roared as Dollfuss' corpse was lowered into the ground. All the church bells in Vienna rang as the coffin was carried out of St. Stefan's. Above the cemetery airplanes soared, waving large black banners. Cabinet ministers accompanied the widow and the mother of the murdered Chancellor to the gravesite. In his funeral address at Dollfuss' coffin. Prince Starhemberg reiterated that as long as there was an Austria the fight would go on for Dollfuss' ideals. Vienna, August 1st. — Only a few hours after the death sentence had been delivered on them, Otto Planetta and Franz Holzweber were hung yesterday. Both were allowed to see their wives before they were hung. Only officials were there when the executions were carried out. Planetta was a Catholic. Holzweber was a Protestant. Clergy accompanied them down their final path. |

August 10, 1934 page 1 _____ Interment amid Great Ceremony — Hitler delivers the Final Words _____ Following the death of Reich President Paul von Hindenburg on August 2nd a memorial ceremony was held on Monday in Berlin before the assembled members of the German Parliament. Reich President Adolf Hitler delivered a magnificent address in which he paid tribute to the deceased Reich President. The address was heard even here in America over the radio, followed on Tuesday by a burial ceremony in front of the Tannenberg Memorial attended by many thousands of men, women and children. Next to officers in colorful, old uniforms one saw many in conventional funeral garb and the Führer of the NSAPD (National Socialist Workers Party of Germany.) Delegates of the War Veterans, Steel Helmets, black and brown clothed Stormtroopers, and Hitler Youth groups surrounded the Field Marshal's World War I observation hill (Feldherrnhügel) and at the broad walls of the Memorial Stone stood Army Soldiers with Steel Helmets. With the chiming of the bell at 11 o'clock the Hindenburg family entered. Captain Oskar von Hindenburg, the Field Marshal's only son, his wife, the two daughters of the deceased, and his five grandchildren were all dressed in white. Cries of "Heil Hitler," which sounded before the Memorial, announced the entry of the Führer, and as he took his place he saw the right arms of everyone in the crowd raised in the Hitler greeting. He rushed over to Captain Oskar von Hindenburg, whose hand he shook, and then went to Hindenburg's daughters and kissed each one's hand. The drum roll sounded and the Army soldiers, the S.S., the Air Patrol, and the Sailors stood at attention as the flag, which led Hindenburg to victory in Tannenburg, was lowered. The Funeral March from Beethoven's Eroica was audible through the muffled drum roll. An officer came out of the Field Marshal's Tower carrying a velvet cushion belonging to von Hindenburg. Behind him were six officers with the Field Marshal's medals and decorations of honor. Ten officers carried the coffin. They stopped before the podium. The drums and the music ceased. Army Chaplain Bishop Dohrmann began to speak. "Loyalty" was chosen as the central theme of his eulogy, which ended with a prayer. The choral piece, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," was played and all sang along. Those living well beyond the Memorial were amazed by the way the song could be heard miles away throughout the East Prussian countryside. As the hymn faded away, Hitler climbed the podium, and it quickly seemed as through there had been an unforeseen incident, because the Reich Führer had forgotten his manuscript. While all waited with baited breath, Hitler's adjutant gave Hitler a copy of the eulogy and Hitler began with a moving but significantly perceivable tone in his voice with which he ended: "Even when the last trace of the mortal remains of the Field Marshal are gone, he will live on in our memories for eternity. Our Field Marshal is now going to Valhalla." For a moment there was dead silence, then the cannons began their tribute with 101 shots. To the tune of "I had a comrade" and going on to "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" and the Horst Wessel Song the coffin was carried to its final resting place. Suddenly, before they reached the burial vault, an upbeat military march played, almost working like an annoying noise until people recognized that it was the regimental march of Hindenburg's old regiment and to this tume the coffin was carried from the bright sunshine to the dark of the crypt. The funeral for Germany's national hero was over. |

August 10, 1934 page 1 _____ Hindenburg's Voice will be used — Much talk about a Recording with a Plea from the Dead Man for Hitler _____ Berlin, August 9th. — Having returned to the capital city from Tannenberg and Hindenburg's funeral, Reich Führer Adolf Hitler and his ministers are applying all their energy to the August 19th referendum in which the nation is expected to accept Hitler's takeover of the Presidential Office. Only a few hours after the funeral ceremony at the Tannenberg War Memorial on Thursday, the Propganda Ministry began with the propaganda for the referendum with a radio broadcast of a record with a plea in which Hindenburg made an appeal for German unity during the referendum after Germany's exit from the League of Nations. This recording was probably broadcast many times in the interim since people felt the magnetism of the name Hindenburg and the memory of how he had backed Hitler after his appointment as Chancellor and thus would prompt a favorable vote by the German people approving Hitler as Reich Führer. Voters will go into an election booth containing a slip of paper on which they will mark their approval or disapproval of Hitler's policies. The paper will then be placed into a sealed box. Results will be made known by radio after the counting of the ballots. There's expected to be 90 percent participation by eligible voters. In the next week voters will have a chance to look at the voting roster to see if their names are correctly listed. Many changes in the diplomatic corps are predicted. It seems likely Dr. Hans Luther will be recalled as German Ambassador to Washington. |

August 10, 1934 page 3 Order of the Day from the Chief of Staff Berlin. — Viktor Lutze, current Chief of Staff of the Nazi Brown Shirts, has given notice that the vacation of Stormtroopers, which began at the time of the Roehm Revolt of June 30th, has come to an end. In his order of the day it's stated that the full service operations are restored and at the same time all conditions put into effect for the vacation, such as the uniform ban, have been cancelled. The SA, as it is being called from now on, will once again be present among the German people so they may exercise their assignments with resolution on the front lines in a different sense from what was decreed in the vacation orders by traitors, who have been removed. The SA must revert to its old course which allowed it to become great and strong and away from the distractions to simplicity, exemplary behavior while on and off duty and connectivity to the people's movement, which are the grounding principles of the SA. The order of the day closes with "Long live the Führer. Long live Germany!" German Court Fines an American _____ Glogau. — The United States citizen Jacob Straub, who lives on Long Island, was fined 1500 Marks at the local court because he was found guilty of negligence in an auto accident. August 10, 1934 page 9 _____ Says Mrs. Schneider, who returned here from Germany after an Eleven Year Stay _____ Almost all the information, which was published in the American Press concerning Germany and the Hitler government, was disputed recently by Mrs. Alfred Schneider, who returned here after an eleven year stay in Berlin. And though she still says that life under Kaiser Wilhelm was the most pleasant, not because of the Imperial government but rather because during its time there was no more happy country and there were no more fortunate people as Germans before the war. After the war the residents quickly turned to Communism until Hitler's Nazis seized the helm. However despite Herculean efforts made by the National Socialist government to liberate the country from the psychological and economic consequences of the war, the country was far from the comfort of the prewar years. Additionally Mrs. Schneider has not heard nor seen anything of the bad treatment of foreigners by the Nazis except for what she saw in the American press. "My experiences in Germany were with friendly and courteous people who were more than kind to foreigners," Mrs. Schneider said. She was in no way aware of restrictions in her personal freedom under the Nazi government. It is true that we may not speak against the government on the streets but we also wouldn't do that if we were in Italy either," Mrs. Schneider remarked. The taxes on her Berlin home have been reduced in the last six months. The government has declared itself ready to increase construction activities by paying 20 percent for repairs and remodeling. "If I had turned my home into a two-family house the government would pay 40 percent," Mrs. Schneider said. She stayed in Germany eleven years after leaving Chicago to study music. Her two sons, Jack 13 and Robert 7, will be attending the schools here in the fall. Both are blond-haired boys, who speak German and English fluently. Mr. Schneider is still in Germany where he has an influential position in a German Potash Syndicate. He also wants to come to America as soon as his Berlin home is sold and he can find a position here. Mrs. Schneider is currently living with her children in the home of Mrs. A.B. Lindsay, 614 Euclid Ave. — The two Syracuse Savings Banks, the Onondaga County Savings Bank and the Syracuse Savings Bank, are on the list of the 100 largest banks in the United States. |

August 10, 1934 page 9 We Have-Nots can't understand the circuitous reasoning of the money system because we don't have any to lend. We only raise enough money with our taxes to pay the interest. The billions in interest-bearing debt are responsible for our hight taxes, as this table illustrates: The National Debt of the United States:
Yearly Payable Interest:
Yearly Disbursement:
These figures only cover the federal government of the United States. Increase the interest by another $20,000,000,000 for the states, cities, and local communities which encumbered debt and the pot boils over and tax payer have to raise nearly $10,000,000,000 per year for city, state and national governmental institutions. Our current tax laws cover only a third of the taxes needed in the next year. As a result the next Congress will apply the screws to the taxpayers in such a way that they'll see black instead of red before their eyes. Words of Consolation for Women _____ According to many men, dishwashing is an activity belonging to the realm of women. That's especially true of German men before they reach American soil. Here things change somwehat when you hear that the American male often helps his wife with the dishwashing. Even the American poet Christopher Darlington Morley, who was born in Haverford Pa. in 1890, not only dedicated a poem to his wife but also helped her with the dishwashing. August 10, 1934 page 10 A mysterious meeting of agents planning to restore the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and place Archduke Otto, left, on the throne, assertedly has been held at Vitznau, near Lucerne, Switzerland. While the monarchist movement went forward, reportedly under the direction of Baron Dr. Kurt Wiesner, inset, personal representative of Prince Otto and Empress Zita, rumors in diplomatic circles revealed the possibility of a marriage union of Princess Maria, above, youngest daughter of King Victor Emmanuel of Italy, and Otto, in forceful coup to keep Austria independent of Germany. August 17, 1934 page 1 _____ Von Papen delivered it to the Reichsführer (National Leader) before his Departure for Vienna. _____ Berlin, August 16th. — As reported today, before his departure for Vienna former Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen delivered Hindenburg's "Political Testament" to Hitler in Berchtesgaden. Lying on his deathbed at his ancestral estate and disturbed by the conditions in Germany, the Reich President busied himself with his last thoughts on the restoration of the monarchy, which in his opinion could prevent the downfall of the nation. In one section he wrote about his concerns for Germany's future: "When will the rocky pinnacle rise out of this stormy sea to rescue Germany — the German Empire." It's unknown how von Papen came into possession of the "Political Testament," yet one might assumevon Hindenburg. In a section of the testament the author expressed great admiration for Hitler's work and after listing the number of postwar problems in the nation he touched upon the nation's situation after Hitler's seizing of power and made it clear that he had reconciled himself with the Nazi Regime and despite his love for the monarchy it was his wish that "his Chancellor would become his successor." |

August 17, 1934 page 5 _____ The name "Kohl's Restaurant" hasn't been around here for more than half a century but it's been well known from New York to California, and even if it hasn't existed due to certain conditions for a long time, it has made a reappearance under the same name and under the same management, serving the public the best food and drink. The restaurant at 325 Butternut St, corner of Townsend St., is tastefully decorated and the dining hall on the northside of the city may be defined as one of the most beautiful. Within there are beautifully painted old pictures, some of which contain the following inscriptions:
"Whosoever doesn't love women, wine and song
"The uglier the woman,
"Beer or wine,
Grain and hops
Talk little, say what's true.
The Rodensteiner Testament states: Drink until your Blessed End! The German can risk anything;
Every old German knows Kohl's Restaurant and will gladly return to it because it has the best in food and drink. And Kohl's will be happy to see and greet their many old friends back again and win over many new friends. |

August 24, 1934 page 5 _____ There's Talk about Theft of Government Weaponry and a Plot against the Government. Los Angeles, Calif. — Sensational reports have been made in all the newspapers concerning excessively exaggerated testimony before the Subcommittee of Congress investigating "unamerican activities." Virgil Hayes, who allegedly had connections with soldiers from the Intelligence Service of the German Navy, testified that he was offered $10 for rifles, $50 for machine guns and $20 for cases of ammunition from W.W. Kemp, Commander of the "Silver Shirts" of San Diego, Cal. The Silver Shirts wanted him to steal the weapons from the Federal Arsenal in San Diego. If one considers the offered sums, it's not too farfetched to link it with a plot to steal the weapons from the Arsenal. Hayes was allegedly also observed at the Silvershirt exercises with the U.S. Government weapons and he alluded to a plot to take over control of the American government. There was also testimony from many witnesses that the authories in San Diego, with the exception of the undersheriff who was a Jew, were secretly in league with the Silver Shirts. Allegations that the Silvershirt organization was connected to the Nazi Movement were completely groundless when Pelley, the leader of the Silver Shirts, expressly denied any connection with Hitler and Hitlerdom, however he did say that he admired Hitler. The German Vice-Consul in Los Angeles, Dr. Georg Gyssling, had made his subpoenaed appearance before the Committee contingent upon approval by the German Embassy in Washington. The suspicion that a check for $215 was sent by Dr. Gyssling but endorsed by E.W. Rehmer might lead to something proved incorrect. E.W. Rehmer is the name of the secretary to the Vice-Consul. |

August 24, 1934 page 5 _____ (Sent in) In its battle against religion, the Russian government has now shattered the Lutheran Church and left it to the same fate as that encountered by the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. Most Russian citizens. who belonged to the Catholic and Lutheran churches in Russia, were and are of German descent. The Lutheran Church alone had 1,300,000 member after its incorporation with the Balkan States. The fight is not only aimed at the clerics but also recently against lay members, who have anything to do with the churches. They issue charges of espionage and pass judgment on them in secret administrative sessions, mostly death by firing squad. We know that 35 Lutheran pastors and as many Cahtolic priests were either sent into exile or shot. There are only a few who escaped that fate but for how long? No one knows, two to three days? The presiding bishop of the Lutheran Church in Russia, Bishop Theodore Meyer, told me years ago that he would suffer a martyr's death someday and he expected it would be for the sake of the many who preceded him. Unfortunately his wish was not fulfilled since he died a few weeks ago. He escaped the government, however it took Bishop Meyer's 28-year-old son and shot him soon after his father's death. This hit me pretty hard because I had stayed for weeks at Bishop Meyer's home in Moscow and his son was a constant companion on my trip in Russia. When I remember all the clerics of the Catholic and Lutheran churches who stood alongside and worked in Russia for almost 300 years, I think of the many hours I spent in Catholic and Lutheran pastors' homes and how I got to know just about all of them personally. It makes my heart ache. They all knew back them that the end would come either with a bullet or exile in Siberia. As a high-ranking Soviet official told me years ago in Moscow, it is a crime against the State to live a Christian life or to be a Christian. And then there are our many travelers who spend a short time in Russia and understand neither its customs nor its language and tell us about the religious freedom in Russia. There are also clerics who bring such nonsense to America and spout it here. It's an interesting fact that the government first smashed the Orthodox Church. Unfortunately it had no advocates in the world outside of Russia. Then it was onto the Catholic Church and recently onto the Lutherans. Has anyone heard a word of protest or of any protest group except for those indulged by Father Walsh of Georgetown, Washington, D.C? So-called Christian governments and countries and we ourselves, who call our nation God's special country, have time and money to protest against the treatment of the Armenians and raise the alarm against Hitler, but remain still with nothing to say about the slaughter and maltreatment of millions of Christians in Soviet Russia. That's something to think about. Are we all becoming rosy-red Bolshevists? We here have a good idea of what we can expect in this country if good people want to raise the Red Flag in place of the Stars and Stripes (and we have a large number of Germans here who see a humane paradise in Russia.) To be a Christian under the Red Flag means to be a criminal of the State. It looks that way and we remain silent! Pastor Dr. W.L. Scheding [Translator's Note: This is the first time I've seen the Pastor use "Dr." before his name. Doctorate granted earlier in 1934?] |

August 31, 1934 page 4 _____ The other day the wife of Sinclair Lewis, Dorothy Thompson Lewis, was expelled from Germany. She was a longtime American newspaper correspondent in Berlin and before she boarded the train in Berlin for Paris she said that the expulsion was probably the result of her writing about the Hitler Movement. The government declared that her articles might have damaged the Reich's reputation. Since then the author has reached Paris, one might wonder just how kindly she speaks about Germany and the new government in spite of her banishment. She stated that Hitler might want peace despite the war rearmament, that he is Germany's ideal man and he has given new hope and unity to Germany. She said further, "Hitler is a natural leader. Any man, who can stand at the top of millions of other men, must be a leader whether or not he is loved personally. One cannot compare Hitler with Mussolini or Bryan. If Bryan had stood at the pinnacle of the American people, one might have been able to make a comparison. However the difference is that Bryan was a failure while Hitler is a success. Hitler is the ideal of the German people. When he was realizing his ascent, the Germans were without hope. He gave the Germans new hope and unity." "In America we always have a free Press and we deport no one if we don't love what they wrote. However this is not our American model. A country has the right to govern itself even if the people, who visit it, do not consider it right. I don't want to start a dispute with Germany because I think it would be worthless and useless." It's truly noble to hear something like that from an American newspaper reporter and let anyone else say what he wants and stick a feather in his hat, if he's powerful enough to disparage the German government, let him follow this example. Each government has the right to govern itself and other countries should leave it in peace. That's just what Germany has wanted all along and it wants it today. Registered Reich Marks No Longer Sold _____ The Hamburg America Line and North German Lloyd have announced that after September 9th of this year registered Reich Marks can no longer be purchased. Money transfers can also no longer be issued due to this special ruling, a decision announced by the Reichsbank. Persons travelling to Germany or transferring money to Germany must do this before September 9th if they want to make use of the registered Mark. Royal Couple Marry for the Second Time _____ In the last issue we mentioned the marriage of Miss Norma E. Allewelt, daughter of Emil Allewelt of 1206 Harrison St. with Prince Michaele Kildicheff of Russia, which occurred last week in New York City. To firmly anticipate all probabilities surrounding the marriage since experience indicates royal marriages do not hold together for very long, a religious ceremony took place Saturday afternoon at 4 PM at the home of the father of the bride. The brother and sister of the bride acted as witnesses. After the ceremony the royal couple went for a short stay at the Allewelt summer home on Frontenac Island, Thousand Islands. |

September 14, 1934 page 5 _____ Leaving Syracuse Tomorrow to first say Farewell to Relatives in Phliadelphia _____ Recently Mr. Karl Aupperle of 218 South Avenue returned from a month-long stay in Germany and expressed the wish to return to the old homeland for good. And today that wish becomes reality. Mr. Aupperle will return to the old homeland in Schorndorf, Württemberg with children and belongings and recommence residence in the home he left back in 1927 in order to emigrate to America with the firm intention of remaining here permanently. However circumstances and business relations now prompt him to once again "return home." Early tomorrow Mr. Aupperle will leave Syracuse with his wife and two sons, Walter and Samuel, to spend a few more days in Philadelphia and say farewell to relatives living there, his daughter Marie Aupperle, employed as a hospital nurse, and a sister of Mrs. Aupperle's, Mrs. Christ Eiserle. On Saturday, September 19th, the proud ship "Europe" will carry the emigrants away from the United States. But the entire family will not abandon the "Promised Land." At lease one son, Walter Aupperle, intends to come back here in around six months after he acquires more knowledge of various branches of his business then come back to apply that knowledge here. Another son, Max Aupperle, son-in-law of the well-known German couple, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Haas of 142 N. Edwards Avenue, lives in Batavia. Mr. Karl Aupperle and his son Walter are both members of the Humboldt Lodge, Order of the German Harugari where on Wednesdy evening Mr. Aupplerle first announced his decision to leave. He received heartfelt best wishes from the Lodge membership. Walter Aupperle will retain his membership in the Lodge. The Syracuse Union also offers best wishes on their new endeavors to the respected Auuperle Family, loyal readers of the newspaper since their arrival in Syracuse. It is our hope that the Aupperle Family will return here someday. Mother is Dead; Son Cancels His Trip to Germany _____ When a mother suddenly dies it seems the appeal to visit the old homeland no longer has its charm. Mr. Hubert Kurt Pirwitz, 26 of 714 No Alvord St. received a letter at the beginning of the month from the old homeland which reported the illness of his mother. The young man had nothing more urgent to do than acquire a passport as quickly as possible in the desire to see his monther alive one last time. In the interim he got the sad news that his mother had died and the burial of the dearly departed followed last Wednesday. Hubert cancelled the passport because he no longer saw any reason to make a trip to Germany since his loved one no longer walked the earth. Mr. Pirwitz is a baker by trade and has a wide circle of friends here. He obtained his citizenship on April 3rd of this year. Our deepest sympathies for the loss of his mother.
